Tips For Building Positive Relationships with family

Building positive family relationships: tips The ordinary, everyday things that families do together can help build and sustain strong relationships with teenagers. These tips might help you and your family: Regular family meals are a great chance for everyone to chat about their day, or about interesting stuff that’s going on or coming up. If you encourage everyone to have a say, no-one will feel they’re being put on the spot to talk. Also, many families find that meals are more enjoyable when the TV isn’t invited! Try setting aside time for fun family outings – you could all take turns choosing activities. A relaxing holiday or weekend away together as a family can also build togetherness. Our article on teenagers and free time has more ideas for things you can do as a family. One-on-one time with your child gives you the chance to stay connected and enjoy each other’s company. It can also be a chance to share thoughts and feelings. If you can, try to find oppor...

Anxiety and Teenagers

What is anxiety? Everybody feels anxious sometimes, especially when faced with unfamiliar, dangerous or stressful situations. Anxiety can include body signals such as ‘butterflies’, a sinking feeling, tense or uncomfortable feelings, or ‘nerves’. It’s a normal reaction to challenging situations. Anxiety in teenagers As children become teenagers, their boundaries expand. They have new challenges and opportunities. They want more independence and their brains change. Because of all these changes, adolescence can be a particularly stressful time, which can cause anxiety . For example, teenagers might worry about starting secondary school, looking a particular way, fitting in with friends, sitting an exam, performing in a play at school or going to the school formal. Sometimes they might even have irrational concerns about the world ending. Also, as their independence increases, teenagers might worry about being responsible for their own actions and getting a job. For most ...

TEENAGERS AND SELF HARM

It isn’t uncommon for young people to self-harm. Sometimes self-harming is temporary – but it can result from serious emotional distress. There can be lasting consequences if teenagers who are hurting themselves don’t get treatment. Counselling can help them learn how to manage distressing feelings in the future. About self-harm Self-harm is when people deliberately hurt themselves as a way of coping with painful or strong emotions. It’s a way of trying to get control over those feelings. For some people, the attempt to control or stop feelings through self-harm is actually a way of trying to heal themselves. Self-harm is generally a sign that a person is in deep distress . Self-harm happens in different ways, some more obvious and serious than others. Forms of self-harm include: cutting scratching carving branding or marking the body picking at scabs so they don’t heal pulling hair burning or grazing yourself biting, bruising or hitting hitting...

Aware Moment-to-Moment Leads Mindfulness

Mindfulness is about paying attention to what’s going on right now, moment by moment, rather than thinking about the past or worrying about the future. Mindfulness can boost emotional and physical wellbeing. It can also help you with stress, anxiety and depression. Mindfulness: the basics Our minds are constantly active. You might be watching television – but also thinking about the past, or worrying about something, or wondering what you’re going to have for dinner. Mindfulness has been defined in several ways, including: giving your complete attention to the present on a moment-by-moment basis paying attention in a particular way, on purpose, in the present moment, without judgment. It’s about being more aware as you live and experience each moment – as the moment happens. It can be a useful way of calming yourself and focusing on what you’re doing. You can be mindful of your internal world – for example, sensations, breath and emotions. Or you can focus on what’s around...

HOME ALONE......CHILD HELPLINE 1098

No legal age for leaving children home alone There’s no one law in India that says at what age you can or can’t leave your child home alone. In Queensland if you leave a child under 12 years of age for an ‘unreasonable time’ without supervision you have committed a misdemeanour. However, the legislation also says that whether the time is unreasonable depends on all the relevant circumstances. The law says you’re legally obliged to make sure that your child is properly looked after. You’re expected to provide food, clothing, a place to live, safety and supervision. You can be charged with an offence if your child is left in a dangerous situation, not fed, clothed or provided with accommodation. The police or Children, Youth and Family Services can remove children from situations where their safety is in serious danger and where there’s no guardian present. This means that you need to use your own judgment about leaving children home alone. This involves thinking about whet...

To Celebrate Valentine’s Day You Don’t Need A Valentine

For most of my young adult life, I Had been celebrate Valentine’s Day with my ,,,,,,,,,,,. It has always been something I never had to think or worry about — until now. I’m okay with it because being single on this day is not something to be ashamed or embarrassed about. In fact, I think it calls for a celebration. While couples will celebrate their love on this day and probably post an annoying amount of photos to prove it (sorry, but it’s true), us single people should be celebrating not only our love for who we have in our lives, but our love for ourselves. After all, Valentine’s Day is not called the day of couples, or the day of relationships. It’s called the day of love. And who wouldn’t want to celebrate that? Instead of having high expectations of what your boyfriend or girlfriend would plan for you on this day, you get to plan a day for yourself. Instead of being incredibly happy with another person, be incredibly happy with yourself. Instead of having...

Valentine’s day Bickering in India!!!.

Every year more and more Indians are becoming aware of a celebration or festival called ‘Valentine’s Day’. Those who participate or engage in such celebration do not fully understand  what is valentine’s day and why it is celebrated, who started celebrating it or how it should be celebrated? And the same goes for all the forces who oppose that Valentine’s day should not be celebrated or for their opinion that the youth are getting into western or orthodox Christian culture. And as far those who know little about St.Valentine, they think that that the Saint was involved in uniting couples in love and had been persecuted for that and even in prison he coupled many in love, for he was the embodiment of love and that of Jesus’s Gospel. The “root” of all religion is “Love”. Every Religion talks only about Love. Christianity is about Love, Love for Humanity. Islam is for Love. Love and compassion is the message of their messenger. Buddha is once again of “L...

Stress in teenagers: what is it?

Stress in teenagers – and anyone – isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Stress is the way your body responds to challenges and gets you ready to face them with attention, energy and strength. Stress gets you ready for action. When you feel you can cope with these challenges, stress gives you the motivation to get things done. But there can be problems when your stress is greater than your ability to cope. Signs of stress in teenagers Signs of stress in teenagers can show up in their behaviour, emotions, body and thinking. Changes in your child’s behaviour might include: withdrawing from friendship groups or activities she usually enjoys seeming nervous or anxious sleeping too little or too much eating more ‘comfort food’ eating less wanting to be by herself more than usual crying refusing to go to school having emotional ‘ups and downs’ for no obvious reason having less energy than usual drinking more caffeine products or taking over-the-counter painkillers – for ...

Five Behaviour Problems of Teens

To be fair, no one has ever pretended that parenting a teenager was going to be easy. Still, until your own kids reach that stage, it's tempting to believe your family will be immune to teen behavior problems. No, you tell yourself, your teenager will never talk back, stay out too late or pierce her eyebrow. Teenagers are basically hard-wired to butt heads with their parents, says Stuart Goldman, MD, director of psychiatric education at Children's Hospital in Boston. "Adolescence is a time of rapid change for kids both physically and cognitively," he explains. "It's the task of the teenager to fire their parents and then re-hire them years later, but as consultants rather than managers." But that doesn't mean you have to take it lying down. With the right approach, you can troubleshoot the following teen behavior problems in a relatively civilized fashion. Teen Behaviour Problem 1: Your Teen Seems To Hate You One minute your sweet chil...
