To make them understand the futility of their fight, Shiva took the form of a huge fire pillar in the form of Linga with fire. He asked Brahma and Vishnu to go and find the tip of the fire pillar to decide who is supreme.Brahma, in the form of a swan, went upwards. Vishnu, as Varaha, moved towards the earth. But, they failed to find the end even after moving long distances. Brahma, feeling ashamed to come back failed, took a Ketaki flower with hima and told Shiva that he found it at the tip of the fire. He also told Ketaki flower that nobody will use her as an offering for Pooja from thereafter. View PhotosEssence Of The Festival / The Importance Of Maha Shivaratri
The main significance of maha shivaratri is that the Lord of Gods, Mahadev, appeared in the form of "Lingodbhav Moorti" exactly at midnight on Maha Shivratri. This happened on the 14th day in the dark half of the month of Phalguna. Since this is considered as the first time that Shiva took the form of Linga, the day is celebrated as Maha shivratri. Worshipping Shiva on this day will bring a whole lot of happiness and prosperity.
Another story behind Maha Shivratri is related to a poor tribal man who was a devotee of Shiva. Once he lost his way in the forest during night. Hearing the growls of wild animals, he became scared climbed to a tree. He was afraid whether he will fall if he sleeps. So to stay awake, he plucked leaves from the tree and dropped it, while chanting the name of Shiva. In the morning, he found that the leaves were all falling on a Linga. This all-night worship pleased Shiva and the devotee got divine bliss
