What is an Eclipse?
The Earth, Moon and the Sun are involved when it comes to the formation of a lunar or a solar eclipse. In a solar eclipse, the moon blocks the light of the sun and therefore, it is called the Solar eclipse or Surya Grahan. The duration of the eclipse varies during which the moon covering the sun doesn’t let the rays of the sun reach the Earth. The solar eclipse affects all living beings – humans, birds, bees and animals.
Understanding the inauspicious time during Surya Grahan
Surya Grahan or the duration before and after the grahan is considered very inauspicious and taken very seriously by people, especially in the Indian subcontinent. This is known as Sutak Kaal and it is taken into consideration. Here is how it works:
What is Sutak Kaal during Surya Grahan
The Sutak Kaal is when which no auspicious work should be started or carried out. The time starting at 12 hours before the Solar eclipse begins, the Sutak Kaal begins. This ends when the individual following the rituals takes a bath after the time of salvation of the eclipse. The puja mandir at home should be cleaned as well. When Sutak begins, the temples are kept shut and no worship or prayers are carried out.
What Not to Do, and What to Do During Solar Eclipse
Since the start time of the Solar eclipse until its end, it is best to do indulge in chanting of mantras, meditation, prayers and hawan. However, no idol worship should be done. Once the Sutak kaal is over, one should bathe, wear new clothes and clean the idols with Ganga jal.
Chant mantras
Chanting gayatri mantra or a favoured guru mantra is important. Lighting a Deepak/diya is equally important.
Avoid all activities
During this time, avoid eating any food, cooking, bathing/urination, sleeping or any other activity.
What to do After the End of Solar Eclipse
Once the period of the Solar eclipse is over, people should bathe, wear clean clothes. Paying tribute to ancestors and offering charity is considered auspicious now.If there is a pilgrimage location nearby, the individual should visit the place. He/she may take a dip in the holy waters there.
Important tasks to be performed
Tasks to be Performed during an Eclipse are as follows:People living in the areas which are affected by the Surya Grahan or where the grahan is visible should follow the rules as per chronology.First of all, as the time Eclipse time starts, take a bath. In the mid of this period go for doing meditation and mantra chartings.At the end of Eclipse, doing charity and memorial works is considered favorable.Also, taking a bath after the salvation of Eclipse and donating grains, clothes, money etc. and after completion of all three works take a bath again.
Chanting Mantra During Solar Eclipse
Generally, during the time of Eclipse chanting of any mantra is fruitful. Or else Surya mantra can be chanted of during Solar Eclipse. The Mahamritunjay mantra, reliever of all sorts of problems can be good if chanted. Mahamritunjay mantra is as follows:
